Ms. Amy

Markers on Paper

44 cm x 59 cm

Expectations by society can cause confusion in one's identity. The pressures to be perfect stress out a person because if they make a mistake, it would prove the doubts about them to be right. Women have faced this for years and have worn different masks to live up to the expectations put out for them. The use of stippling and different line technique using marker allows for a comic book type of aesthetic inspired by the pop art movement.

What Makes You Beautiful

Acrylic Paint on Paper

44 cm x 59 cm

Beauty comes in different forms and in this era, its acceptance of it is heavily present in the media. This piece explores the idea of self acceptance; regardless if a woman wears make up or is bare face, she is beautiful. The use of layering images with different bright colors in the painting reveal different focal points to show the positivity of diversity when it comes to beauty.

Homemade

Watercolor Paint and Ink on Watercolor Paper

30.48 cm x 43.18 cm

Despite any job a woman might have she still manages to bring her family together, especially through food. They bind people together to share a culture and heritage to create happy moments. This is something that was previously taken for granted and was just expected of women, but now appreciated. Watercolor was used to create texture in the pies and ink was added to highlight small details, binding it for the piece to have a classical look.

The Voices

Photo Collage

22.86 cm x 19.05 cm

This artwork is about the pressures of the media that tell women how they have to be, which reveals the theme of identity. Choosing to be like everyone else and the decision of giving into the basic standards of a "pretty woman", is an internal problem young women face. The use of vivid colors and repeated images are used to emphasize the need of escape and to add a fever dream like aesthetic to the work.

I Serve You

Magazines, articles, newspapers on board

45.72 cm x 60.96 cm

Women were once seen as only useful in the kitchen and at home serving their husbands. Now they hold influence, power and excel in fields that even exceed the efforts of those of their male colleagues. The use of media clippings allow for variety in the piece and show that the white man in the suite and tie that used to demean women, now admire them and what they do.

Black Widow

Acrylic Paint on Canvas

20.32 cm x 25.4 cm

The media has and still plays a big role in influencing people. The female subject is inspired by actress Elizabeth Taylor and she along with other female actresses were seen as the most beautiful women. Although they seemed perfect, the impacts of being pressured by others can cause "cracks" and harm internally that are not presented by the media. The use of a black background is to portray a dark tone and is contrasted by the spiders web which is in an opposite tone.

Crave

Colored Pencil on Tan Paper

22.86 cm x 30.48 cm

This is the first in a series of three artworks. This piece reveals the misogynistic stereotype that women are addicted to shopping and spending money. This hypnosis is superficial and mocks that idea that money will be a way for females to be swayed or put under control. The use of a monochromatic background is used to put heavy emphasis on the bloodshot eyes that crave the money of men.

Opening Act

Acrylic Paint on Tan Paper

22.86 cm x 30.48 cm

This is the second in a series of three artworks. This piece demonstrates a shift in power as a woman is playing this male puppet, which mocks the way that men play with the hearts of women and manipulate them with false claims of love. This is a turn of tables, in comparison to the first work where women are seen as weak. The use of acrylic paint allowed for the blended shades and the red curtain background emphasizes the hand and puppet

The Woman’s Empire

Acrylic Paint on Tan Paper

22.86 cm x 30.48 cm

This is the third in a series of artworks. In contrast to the last two pieces, this one conveys the actual power that women possess and show how the future is bright for them, as this new generation will take on larger roles and inspire others. The use of strong and dominant colors are to create emphasis and move the audience.
